Patio Makeover

I had so much fun at the first segment of my new series, “Unlock Happy in Your Home” with Action News Now. Every month I go into a new home, pick an area that needs some sprucing and a little personality, then I get to work some magic. Valerie and Rob Reddemann were my first victims and we unlocked some serious happy! It all started with a visit to their home to get a sense of their style and their interests. To my surprise, they are huge baseball fans, not only baseball, but Cub’s fans! Rob had these amazing vintage seats from Wrigley Field and unique vintage baseball items sprinkled through their home. What a perfect theme to inspire them to entertain and personalize their favorite spot in their home, their patio.  So, I went to work at creating a fresh space that reflected both of their personalities and a fantastic spot to gather with their friends.

Here’s the unveiling:

Rob’s Inspiration: Baseball Lover.

I scavenged his home for all his unique baseball paraphernalia. Here’s what I found.

Valerie’s Inspiration: Chalkboard’s with funny sayings that make people laugh!  She also loved the rich colors in her inspiration piece, the umbrella.

So, my challenge begins, how to create a baseball inspired, rich colored, chalkboard loving patio makeover?  Here’s how I did it:

1. First up, we needed an inspiration color, I took Valerie’s favorite umbrella and pulled a modern color that would move easily through the seasons. Grass green became our palette color. I gave Rob and Valerie the task to sand and paint their chairs green. Next, Valerie went on the hunt for some seat cushions that would tie together the colors in the umbrella. She was so cute, she texted me multiple times from the store until we found the perfect match.  We needed to ground the look, so we pulled in this fresh green and white outdoor rug that Valerie found for $20. SOLD, the perfect accent to tie our look together. We then stripped off the burgundy table cloth and gave the table a good cleaning.  I got very familiar with their kitchen and found some fun white dishes and accessories to set the table. Now, we needed a centerpiece, I found this wooden vessel in their bathroom that hosted all their bath salts and bathroom treats, I loved it and thought it would make a great accent piece outdoors.  I took it home with me and surprised them with an orchid centerpiece that had a fresh and simple look to enhance our patio makeover.

2.  Time to create our baseball corner and sprinkle baseball throughout our theme. We took the items we found inside and created a vintage corner that tied in with the rest of our look. I hung the vintage signs and the picture of Wrigley Field on the wall in a scattered pattern to create a casual look.  I mixed in Valerie’s chalkboard signs, enhanced with baseball sayings, and framed in white to tie in with the rest of our fresh look. Chalkboards are a great way to personalize a space, to show your personality and create a theme for entertaining.

3. I  added touches of baseball to the rest of the patio to keep our theme rolling.  An old apple crate I found on their side yard just needed a little dusting off and became a vintage concession stand stocked with beer and mason jars. One of Valerie’s chalkboards became the perfect place to announce to their guests that cold beer was served here. I hunted more in their kitchen to find vintage accents to enhance their concession stand look. Next, stock the old metal tin with beer, that was the easy part :)

4. Peanuts had to make an appearance in our theme! They made a great accent piece and snacks for their guests. A simple chair and accent table painted in green sat nicely under their umbrella to seat more guests.

5 Ways to Make Your Home HAPPY -Unlock It.

1. Make your Bed. Start off on the right foot, when you make your bed you’ll crave a little more organization in your life because you’ll appreciate how good it makes you feel. And if we feel good, we are happy. Don’t you just want to jump into that nicely made bed!

2. Fresh Cut Flowers-I love this photo, I think she looks so happy. Whether it’s cutting your own flowers in your backyard, going to farmer’s market or hitting your local grocery store, fresh cut flowers will make you smile. Their cheerfulness puts a spring in your step and lightens your home with fresh positive energy.

3. Choose Colors that Flatter YOU! I know this sounds a bit crazy, but for example,  if you have bright red hair and you walk into an orange kitchen, I think you might clash a bit. Choose colors that flatter your best assets, make you shine, make you the king of your castle. I love green, I wear a lot of green as it goes with my green eyes and blonde hair, so I naturally find myself accenting my home with the calming color. Find your color in the rainbow and slide down to your pot of gold, then sit back and watch it brighten your mood.

4.  Express Yourself- Art tells a story, I am not talking about the stock art you pick up in the store that half your block might have hanging on their walls, I am talking creativity. Art that crates a memory, a feeling when you were on vacation, a handmade piece from your kids, or a family symbol that keeps your tradition alive. What makes a home happy is putting YOU in it, so take a look around your home and ask yourself if your art tells your story. Here’s what I came home to the other day, my kids got a little crafty. Total Framer!

 5. Let go of the Crap. Sorry, that’s a little harsh, but really so many people hold onto things that make them hold negative feelings. We feel this obligation to keep things just because they were given to us, don’t get me wrong, I am all for memories, but if you hate it, here’s what I am telling you, bless it and move it along. So I wanted to share this quote with you.

I am gonna let you in on a little secret I do daily. When I walk through my front door everyday, I say, “thank you.” I might not say it out loud, but I am thinking it! It’s a fun little game I play with myself to recharge my mind into HAPPY and to appreciate the support my home gives me everyday.  It is as simple as that.
